Auburn Falls to Troy in Mid-week Clash

Daniel Robert pitched a season-high 2.1 innings, allowing one hit in relief Tuesday vs Troy

#5 Auburn Baseball (30-13) welcomed in-state foe Troy (23-17) to Plainsman Park on Tuesday night for one final mid-week game at home in the 2017 season. The Trojans attacked Auburn pitching early, and put the Tigers away in a sound matter as they earned the 5-2 win.

After a week that saw plenty of production from the middle of the lineup, it was the top of the lineup in Tuesday’s game that carried the load for the Auburn offense. Jonah Todd, Jay Estes, Daniel Robert, and Conor Davis combined to record six of Auburn’s seven hits. Todd and Estes each picked up two hits, with Estes being the breadwinner by sending two runs home.

Auburn used four pitchers, with Christian Camacho taking the loss. Corey Herndon allowed two hits and an earned run in 0.2 innings of work. Elliot Anderson pitched 1.2 innings in his first relief appearance since March 15. Finally, Daniel Robert tossed 2.1 innings, allowing a hit and striking out two batters. The outing is the longest for Robert this season on the mound.

The Trojan bats attacked starter Christian Camacho early as Matt Sanders began the game by reaching on a double from the leadoff spot. The Tigers would go on to retire the next two batters before Trevor Davis stepped to the plate. Davis singled on a 1-2 pitch to left field that was deep enough to score Sanders from second, giving Troy the early 1-0 lead.

Both sides were quiet in the run department until the fifth inning, when Troy extended their lead to 4-0 on a home run by Jackson Cofer, his first of the season. With one down, Brandon Lockridge and Trevor Davis reached on a double and single respectively, before being brought home on the blast. Camacho’s night came to an end after the home run after he allowed nine hits and four earned runs while striking out three in 4.1 innings.

The Tigers answered by cutting the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Luke Jarvis flew out to center field and a Josh Anthony strikeout, the next three batters reached base safely on a hit by pitch and two singles. With the bases loaded, Jay Estes singled up the middle to score Blake Logan and Bo Decker to cut the lead to 4-2.

Trevor Davis delivered yet again for Troy in the top of the sixth on a line drive to left field that scored Steven Whitaker, who reached base earlier in the inning on a walk by Corey Herndon, to extend the Trojan lead to 5-2, which would be the final run scored of the game.

Next up for the Tigers is a three-game set with Mississippi State on the road in Starkville. First pitch of game one is slated for 6:30 P.M. Friday evening.
