On Monday, the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper released their list of top signing classes for 2016, and has ranked Auburn number 5 nationally.
This season’s class is the first signing class under Head Coach, Butch Thompson. Thompson took over as head coach on October 22 of last season, following the dismissal of Sunny Golloway.
This season’s signing class features ten pitchers, six infielders, three outfielders, and one catcher. Five members of this class were also drafted in this year’s MLB Draft.
“The strength of this group is in the numbers,” Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said of this season’s signing class. “Our inaugural class as a staff is going to lay the foundation for moving Auburn baseball back to where we all want to be. Half of the class is pitching which is important to any program. There is also balance as I believe we signed someone at every position on the field.
Thompson says that a key to bringing such a talented recruiting class starts with assistant coaches Brad Bohannon and Doug Sisson.
“When we hired Brad Bohannon it was under the belief that he was arguably one of the best recruiters in the country. I give him full credit as the architect and I’m thankful for the hard work of Doug Sisson as well. This is a credit to our whole staff.”
This signing class is the highest rated signing class by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper since 1996, and the highest rated class since 2007, when Baseball America named Auburn the 5th best.
Auburn will officially open fall practice on October 6th.
